March the 11th to the 14th of 2015 may have been average days for most people but not for the RoboRoos, team 4537, alongside 33 teams from a variety of different locations around the world, including Taiwan, Singapore, China and Hawaii. While most people were working, or going to school, these teams were busy taking part in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition.
During the first two days, our robot was unpacked and set up in the pit area, where we would patch it up when needed. In the first inspection we found an electrical issue which we soon overcame, before beginning the practice matches.
Friday the 13th of March marked the date at which our robot entered the field for the first time and the games began, as well as the day in which we could prove that the robot we had designed, constructed and even decorated in six weeks, was ready to participate in playing a game called ‘Recycle Rush’.
On Saturday, all 33 teams competed in Recycle Rush. We were incredibly successful, winning the FIRST Robotics 2015 Regional Creativity Award (sponsored by Xerox) as well as playing in the quarter finals, where we were chosen alongside team 5663 (Rio Tinto Ground Control) by team 5761 (Illawarra) to compete side by side against other teams.
Congratulations to the drivers of the robot at the competition, to the team members and mentors that came along to support them, to the rest of the team members and mentors who helped construct the robot and all the teams that competed.
It was the hardest fun we ever had!
